Under the Surface is a remarkable Dutch trio formed by drummer Joost Lijbaart, guitarist Bram Stadhouders, and vocalist Sanne Rambags. The group, known for its genre-defying improvisations, came together in 2015 through the Dutch foundation Beaux Jazz, which supports young artistic talent. Rambags, the winner of the Conservatory Talent Award 2017, formed the group with Stadhouders and Lijbaart for the foundation’s Generation Next initiative.

Their music—marked by an adventurous and open approach—led to the release of their debut album in 2017 on Challenge Records, which received glowing reviews. The trio’s universal language of sound has brought them to prestigious festivals in Mali, Mexico, China, Norway, India, and the Netherlands. Joost Lijbaart, a leading figure in the Dutch jazz scene, Bram Stadhouders, a celebrated young musician in the European improvisation circuit, and Sanne Rambags, known for her unique vocal improvisations, create a distinctive and powerful musical experience. Rambags’ voice often functions as an instrument, seamlessly blending with the soundscapes created by Lijbaart and Stadhouders.
